What the hells is Nokia playing at...

The new Maps app doesn't allow the user to track their position on a route.
A route can be calculated, but there is no option to track the position on that route, and the 'jump to location' button removes the route from the display.

Oh yeah, I get it. Not enough people were signing up to pay for downloaded voice directions.

Well, removing a feature is going to make me reach for the credit card, right?
Wrong.
Just one more reason to be Uber pissed at Nokia.

Bring on Google, and bring on Android.

P.S. Or buy a cheap handset, and a Tom Tom cause that's going to be a lot cheaper then shelling out for an N95.

P.S.S. Or someone writes an app that gives us back the tracking functionality.

  1. You are not the first to complain about losing position tracking.  Since I however do have voice navigation I don't really am bothered by it. In fact I consider driving and using the position feature a safety hazard. Walking city-wise the feature seems useful. As such I agree, why remove it? However I can read a map and as suchI have no need for a constant reminder where I am. I know where once I start a know positon. Still, 6 out of 10 people get lost even with a TomTom, so I guess there is merit in the suggestion ;-)

Being on the topic, why do I need to reconfigure Maps to switch for walking instead of doing it straight from the menu. Why not split the navigation menu item into navigate by car and navigate by foot? Delving into some obscure menu seems a waste of time. Besides I forget to switch it back to travel by car...  I am getting tired of finding out my car does not fit on a pedestrian bridge :-P

P.S. I think Map24 Mobile and Google mobile maps might provide position tracking and routing simultaneous. I don't remember clearly and I am to lazy to check it out.

  2. Map24 is also very efficient with its internet bandwidth. Instead of google-ish imagemaps. It transmits bandwith efficient vector graphics.
